1. The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek
The things we most avoid, like darkness, stillness, pain and grief, are precisely the spaces that contain what we are looking for. This is not metaphor. It is a reliable map. Go toward what frightens you most, gently and with support, and you will find love where you expected suffering.
2. Inner child work is the only healing that truly matters
Estrella holds this as her deepest conviction after thirty years of practice. The wounded parts of us do not age, they stay frozen at the moment of the original pain: the five-year-old who was not seen, the twelve-year-old who felt abandoned, the teenager who learned love was conditional. Until those parts are met with compassion, everything we build on top of them is built on a rotten centre. Heal the inner child, and the tree of your life can finally grow without falling.
3. Self-love begins with accepting what you cannot yet love
Rather than trying to affirm or force positive feelings about yourself, Estrella suggests a simpler starting point: just look. Look in your own eyes in the mirror and stay there. Notice what arises, the discomfort, the judgment, the impulse to look away. Then ask: what is actually there not to love? Often the answer, when truly examined, is nothing. The work is not to manufacture love but to dismantle the case against it.
4. Every trigger is an invitation to go inward
When something or someone bothers you, Estrella's practice is immediate and simple: go inside. Not to analyse the other person, not to justify your reaction, but to ask what inside you is being touched. Lars illustrates this perfectly with the story of the loud man at the gym: what annoyed him was not the noise but his own fear of taking up space. The moment he saw that, the man stopped bothering him. The whole world, as Ram Dass says, is a conspiracy to wake you up.

5. Your body is your wisest teacher
Before surrendering to God, to a teacher, or to the universe, Estrella says, surrender to your own body. It knows. It has been quietly trying to tell you what it needs for your entire life. Her own body forced her to rest twice through pelvic instability, decades apart, each time as a necessary correction to how she was living. When she finally learned to listen with love rather than frustration, her relationship with life changed completely.
6. Letting go is not giving up, it’s making space for more
Every significant thing Estrella and Eric built at Finca Vrij came through the same pattern: desire, action, obstacle, release, then arrival in a form more beautiful than what they had planned. The retreat center itself, the land, the new property they are moving toward: all of it arrived when they stopped gripping. This is not passive. It requires genuine surrender, not performance of surrender. The difference is whether you actually open your hands.
7. You are not your body: you are consciousness living in one
Estrella describes the strange experience of looking at her hands after thirty-five years and realising for the first time they were hers. Before that moment, she had lived primarily as a spirit with a body it had not fully moved into. Her practice of living on prana deepened this understanding: the body is not the source of life. It is the vessel through which consciousness experiences life. Treating it accordingly, with reverence, curiosity, and gratitude, changes everything about how you inhabit your days.
8. Everything is a choice, even how you respond to what you did not choose
No one chooses illness, loss, or childhood pain. But we always choose how we meet what happens to us. Estrella wrote this in a small book years ago and still finds it true: you can choose to go inward or to blame outward. You can choose to let grief make you hard or make you more open. You can choose to see the gift in the difficulty or to make yourself a victim of it. These are not easy choices. But they are always available. And they are the only ones that actually shape a life.
